Quang Tri is a coastal province in the North Central region of Vietnam. This is the place of the 17th parallel, the boundary separating the North and South of Vietnam during the wars.
Despite being located quite far from the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Tri today also gradually attracts tourists everywhere, especially those who come to commemorate the heroic martyrs. This province owns 72 cemeteries, including the Truong Son Cemetery and Road 9 cemetery where are the burial places of about 20,000 martyrs.
By plane: Currently, there is no airports in Quang Tri. Therefore, visitors can choose flights to Phu Bai, Hue or Dong Hoi, Quang Binh. If you intend to visit Quang Tri on this occasion, you should purchase tickets early to get cheap price and best seats. It takes visitors about 2 hours travelling by car from Hue, Quang Binh to the city of Dong Ha, Quang Tri. Car fares fluctuate from 75,000- 150,000 VND.
By train: Dong Ha railway station is a pretty big station where welcomes 5 Thong Nhat trains daily, not including the local trains. From Hanoi, tourists can choose SE1 or SE3 train. Departing from the evening, sleeping a night on the train, you will be in Quang Tri in the next morning. Train ticket prices range from 350,000- 750,000 VND.
From Ho Chi Minh City, visitors can travel on train SE6 or SE8 during about a day and a night to Quang Tri in the next morning. Ticket prices range from 550,000 to 1.3 million VND.
By car/ bus: Departing from Hanoi, travelers should choose the cars running at night of brands such as Quang Tuu, Dong Hien … These cars start at dusk and arrive to Quang Tri in the morning of the next day. Ticket prices range from 230,000 to 250,000 dong.
Cars of prestige brands running on route Saigon – Dong Ha include Hoang Long, Tien Dat Thanh, Duc Trang … which are all start at Eastern bus station. Guests can book tickets via the call center of the car providers for about 500,000- 600,000 VND/ ticket depending on the service package and meals. Travel time is approximately one day.
Following is a suggested 3 day itinerary to Quang Tri for your reference:
Day 1: Road 9 Cemetery – Truong Son Cemetery – Vinh Moc Tunnels – Cua Viet Beach
8 am: After having breakfast, travelers go along the highway 9 to go to Road 9cemetery . You can buy flowers and incense in the cemetery gate, then enter the stage to burn incense.
9 am: Continue going along Highway 9 to the town of Cam Lo, then turn right in the direction of the sign post to Truong Son Tay Branch. From here, you drive another 10 km to reach Truong Son National Cemetery. You can offer incense, dedicate the moment of silence to commemorate the heroes.
10 am: You continue your journey through the provincial road 75 to Gio An ancient wells. This irrigation system is created by the Cham and recepted and preserved to this day by Vietnamese. Gio An ancient well system is estimated to be 5,000 years old.
11 am: Guests runs out next provincial highway 75 to highway 1A, then turn left to the historical monuments of Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River. After visiting the sites, tourists go to the town of Ho Xa, Vinh Linh district for lunch and rest.
2 pm: The next destination in day 1 is Vinh Moc tunnels, a well constructed tunnel system of the rural people in Vinh Moc village, Vinh Thach commune, Vinh Linh district. This is a civil- military work during the war.
4 pm: Visitors take the coastal road toward Cua Tung beach where has seafood market selling all kinds of clams, crabs, fresh fish…. with very cheap price. Guests can purchase and have seafood cooked at the hotel or in houses of local people. Then, you can come to Cua Viet beach if you want to swim, go sightseeing and take photos. Finally, you go to Mai Xa fishing village to eat Chat Chat noodles near the banyan tree of the village and return to Dong Ha.
