Visiting the ancient lovely capital of Laos, and spending a few days to release your soul in the ancient and gentle beauty of Luang Prabang is an exciting way for you to quickly find peace and balance in life.
I arrived in Luang Prabang in the afternoon, after the journey from Nong Khiaw, the best place for Laos adventure tours. Luang Prabang is a very famous tourist city in Laos, located on the banks of romantic Mekong river, a place where I was shared by my friends that very comfortable and great to watch the sunset.
However, after searching for a hotel to stay, I realized that it was not really comfortable like what I had imagined. The reason mainly was I didn’t have hotel reservations in advance, so upon arrival, most of the hotels here were fully booked. Otherwise, the price was up more than 50% compared to normally.
Luckily then I also found myself a beautiful hotel at acceptable prices. After eating a late lunchand arranging luggage in right place, I went out of the hotel and asked the way to the shores of the Mekong River to watch the sunset. The atmosphere was really nice, and I suddenly discovered that, the Mekong here was very different from the first time I saw on the boat in Huay Xai. It is a river, but the beauty is not the same in different places, and I was really excited to start exploring here.
Then, I went to the ferry terminal where I had an appointment with two friends named Chris and Dolf – they were two friends who went through a great time at Muang Ngoi Neua with me. Together we discussed and planned a trip here, and first intention was eating in a cozy riverside restaurant and ending the day with a few bottles of Beer Lao.
Enjoy the sunset from Mount Phou Si
In the next day, our travel plan changed as Chris and Dolf wanted to Plain of Jars in Phonsavan, and I decided to skip this place. I wanted to stay in Luang Prabang in two more days, so I hired a bike to visit the city a little bit.
After visiting a few temples and markets, I have discovered an interesting gym here, and decided to drop by in the evening. Finally, just like the plan outlined yesterday, I decided to climb Mount Phou Si to enjoy sunset.
Once on the mountain you will see a very beautiful temple called Wat Chomsi, from here you will release a panoramic 360 degree view around. Some tourists came to share with me that: you had to come early to get a good scenic location, because it would be very crowded.
I climbed to the top of the mountain when the sun was still up, found myself a pleasant cliff, then I sat down and waited for sunset. Time passed quickly and when looking back, I was surprised to see lots of tourists behind me, I was pretty excited because of my early arriving to get a perfect seat for sightseeing.
Although the sunset here was not the best compared to what I’ve been seeing in many different places, but seeing the final sunshine under the river, my heart easily felt extremely comfortable. It was a peaceful feeling that very difficult to describe.
Alms giving – a unique cultural feature of Laos
The next day I decided to go out to see the monks seeking alms on the street. As usual, the monks here often walk on the street at sunrise to get the food from the locals. At that time on the street, there were many people and tourists waiting for the monks to offer their food. A very stately and quiet scenery.
Miraculous beauty of Kuang Si waterfall
Then I decided to rent a motorbike to Kuang Si, a beautiful waterfall located about 30km from the city center. After moving for a while, unfortunately the tire problem forced me to stop. It was incredible, I had driven nearly 700km on a motorcycle in Mae Hong Son area without any stop to repair the vehicle, while here I had to stop when the trip began for about 30 minutes. Luckily I did not have to go too far to find a place to repair the bike. The mechanic guy looked a little bit clumsy, but very happy and enthusiastic, and it took approximately 1 hour to have the bike fixed, then I continued my journey.
Kuang Si Falls – a waterfall with miraculous beauty is the final venue in my tours to Luang Prabang. Bathing and soaking in the cool stream here is a great way for you to relieve stress and fatigue.
Luang Prabang is a beautiful and peaceful city, a worthy place for you to spend a lot of time to explore and learn.
